I couldn't help to think about a German poet as I read tis the latest blog. A poet I cherish, Bertold Brecht. Brehct wrote the poem'An die Nachgeborenen' with the still all too important lines:<br /><br />Wirklich, ich lebe in finsteren Zeiten!<br />Das arglose Wort ist töricht. Eine glatte Stirn<br />Deutet auf Unempfindlichkeit hin. Der Lachende<br />Hat die furchtbare Nachricht<br />Nur noch nicht empfangen.<br /><br />Was sind das für Zeiten, wo<br />Ein Gespräch über Bäume fast ein Verbrechen ist<br />Weil es ein Schweigen über so viele Untaten einschließt!<br /><br />Der dort ruhig über die Straße geht<br />Ist wohl nicht mehr erreichbar für seine Freunde<br />Die in Not sind? <br /><br />Brecht wrote the words in Denmark - as a fugitive from fascism i 1939. Brecht did cross the street ... took the short distance to Denmark where he lived as a fugitive for some years. <br /><br />I think the poem of Brechts tells me two things really that .. Yes it's OK to feel that we don't do enough .. But - yes, things will be better .. and it's not a crime to contemplate the tree because it maintains our silence about so much wrongdoing ...
